Most leadership books argue a position. This one argues both. A chapter makes the case that leadership is masculine, and the next makes the case that it is feminine. One places it entirely in the here and now, the next entirely in the future. The contradictions are the structure rather than a flaw in it, and the reader is left holding them instead of being handed a resolution. Alf wrote it because he wanted a leadership book that refused easy answers, and because floundering in the paradox is not failing at the job. It is the job. The Finnish subtitle says as much: why a leader always fails, and why that is not a problem. What the book asks for in the end is that leaders show themselves a little mercy about it.
